Sometimes, the best career discoveries happen when you least expect them. For Ryley, it started during COVID, when time at home gave her plenty of opportunities to experiment with her hair. She was constantly changing her color, trying new looks, and discovering just how much she loved the creative process.
With encouragement from her mom, Ryley decided to take that creativity a step further and pursue a career in the beauty industry. Now, a year and a half into her career at Serenity Couture in West Des Moines, she gets to turn her love of hair, fashion, and creativity into something new every day.
What Ryley loves most about being a stylist is that she's always learning. Every guest brings something different to the chair, giving her the opportunity to try new techniques, meet new people, and create a look that's uniquely theirs.
"What I love most about doing hair is you're constantly learning things, and you're constantly meeting new people," she says. "Everyone's different, and so learning new techniques to use on different people is so much fun. And it's like a little art class every day."
Her love for fashion has also made the beauty industry a natural fit. Ryley enjoys seeing how hair can complement someone's personal style and loves the creativity that comes with helping guests try something new.
"Making people feel more comfortable in their skin again is just huge," Ryley says. "It makes me feel good about my work going home."
For Ryley, those moments are what make being a stylist so rewarding. It's not just about creating a new look, but helping someone feel good about themselves in the process.
Since joining Serenity Couture, Ryley has found a team that makes it easy to continue growing and be herself. The people in the beauty industry, she says, are part of what makes the career so special.
"People in the hair industry are great people, and it's nice to be around people that have the same passion and are just as social as you are," she says. "It's very nice to be in the industry where you can be yourself."
For Ryley, that combination of creativity, connection, and constant learning is what makes being a hairstylist so much fun.
