For Lauren, a love for hair started long before she knew it would become a career. She grew up loving hair and makeup, but as she developed her own personal style, she began to see hair as more than just part of a look.
"Once I started getting into my own style, I kind of figured out that hair is your main accessory," Lauren says.
Today, Lauren has been doing hair for 17 years, bringing her experience, creativity, and genuine love for people to her chair at Serenity Couture in West Des Moines.
While Lauren loves the creative side of being a stylist, what she loves most is the opportunity to connect with people. Over the years, those relationships have become one of the most meaningful parts of her career.
"I think what I love most about doing hair is connecting with people," she says. "The clientele and relationship with them, you kind of go through life together."
For Lauren, every appointment is about more than a haircut or a color. It's an opportunity to listen, catch up and be part of someone's life through all of its different seasons.
Lauren's favorite part of the creative process is color, but the finished look is only part of what makes a service meaningful to her. After 17 years in the industry, she's learned that listening to the person in her chair is just as important as creating the right look.
"I'm most passionate when it comes to color — that would be my favorite — but I would say [I’m also passionate about] the finishing product and how the person feels at the end of the service," Lauren says.
She's also learned that every guest brings their own story with them.
"You never know what someone's going through. And so I think giving grace and really listening to that person and not judging [is important]," she says.
For Lauren, it's those small moments of connection and understanding that make being a stylist so rewarding.

"I love Serenity. I love the culture, the support. There's so much growth and opportunity here," she says.
